Places of Note in Gotham City
The hub of activity in Gotham City is Downtown, where Wayne Enterprises and the Wayne Foundation have its headquarters, its very distinctively styled Wayne Tower the center of the Gotham skyline. Downtown also boasts Gotham's theatre district, the Police Station and Prison, City Hall and the Mayor's Offices, as well as many other businesses' main offices, like the Gotham Gazette and Gotham Globe newspapers, though not their practical operations; those can be found in the Industrial District, a polluted, smokestack-filled and unforgiving area that lies in the industrial parks that lead to the double bridges that connects Downtown with the larger Old Town or Historic District.
Two bridges connect Downtown and the larger portion of Gotham Island, Old Town: the Gotham Bridge and the Scott Bridge; there is also a ferry that runs the river, and a natural land route some way north. The Historic District distinguishes itself from the rest of Old Town by housing some of Gotham's classic architecture, including the old Clocktower that Oracle uses as her base of operations. As of late, the Wayne Foundation has been paying for extensive renovations of the Historic District, and its once vacant buildings have become a popular place for artists to establish studios, as well as students and others looking for inexpensive yet extensive lofts.
Further south in Downtown, one runs into The Narrows, a slum where crime is rampant. To the northwest of The Narrows, and west of the Historic District, are the suburbs, The Borough for those who can afford to live outside of the projects; most of Gotham's ordinary citizenry lives here.
To the north, on the outskirts but still within the city limits of Old Town, lies The Palisades, where sits Wayne Manor and the other sparsely dispersed mansions of Gotham's wealthy elite.
On a small peninsula off of the south corner of Old Town Gotham lies Arkham Asylum; once a grand estate built and owned by of one of Gotham's aristocracy with an interest in psychiatry, it was transformed into a home for the mentally disturbed with the hope of reformation but after Arkam's own mental decline and subsequent death, it was transformed into a place to hide and hopefully contain the more dangerous of Gotham's criminals. Gotham's sprawling Cemetery also sits on the peninsula, near where the river breaks into small stagnant pools, creating a damp, swamp-like habitat.
At the southern most end of the river where it feeds into Gotham Lake in Downtown is The Docks; filled with warehouses, some empty for many years, it is the favored base of operations for the organized crime of Gotham.
At the north of Downtown is the Gotham International Airport. The city also sports an elevated train system (The El), which can reach up to four stories tall, and which almost exclusively throughout Downtown with only five stations in Old Town.
